Matte Black is our most popular matte filament.
It is one of four colors we offer with a matte finish. Customers often comment that the matte finish can help hide layer lines. The matte filament is definitely more finicky to print than our normal colors. It requires a lower print temperature than our normal PETG. Once you get the print settings dialed-in, it makes stunning prints. We wrote a post about printing with our matte filament on the Community Forum.
We offer Matte Black on a spool or as a refill. Our refills are compatible with Bambu spools. We have several recommendations for 3D printable spools we've validated here.
The other three colors we offer in matte are the Paper White, Matte Blue, and Matte Red.
We also offer a regular Black.
Material: PETG
Size: 1.75mm
Amount: 1kg / 2.2lb
+/-0.03mm diameter accuracy
We also offer Matte Black on 5kg plastic spools.

From hating this filament because of settings to being my ultimate favorite one 🤤

Nice surface finish and good strength! It's a little bit different from other PETG's I've used since it runs at a slightly cooler temp and tends to the build plate a bit more, but overall I'd recommend it! Pictured is a couple of brackets on the side of a stroller for carrying things like scooters

Started this helmet with a matte'ish' PETG and wanted to continue after running out, came across this Matte Black PETG and decided to give it a go. Have to say I was a little nervous due to all the notes, reviews, sites dedicated to printing this Black Matte PETG, but reviewed and configured my print profile according to a hybrid of my own knowledge and what others had said and it turned out quite good! Top half of the helmet in the Black Matte PETG looks really pleasing.

At first I started printing the PETG with normal settings and I keep getting stringing issues then realized to adjust to what the package was at 210 and it printed beautifully

Love California filament! It’s the only brand I use! Quality products and great deals across the board!

Love this filament. I will recommend you dry the hell out of it though. I use PETG pretty exclusively and this has been one filament where it’s pretty might and day not drying it. I do wish that the spool was like a little more durable because one drop by accident and it’s donzo

Blends flawlessly into injection molded matte black parts. I print it on snapmaker artisan(orca slicer) with just slightly lower temperature.

Just got my first roll of California Filaments Matte Black PETG and I'm super happy with the experience and the filament both! The order process was easy and the shipping was seamless. This material prints really well!

This is the most matte PETG I have found. Not quite as matte as some of the PLAs out there, but if you need the PETG properties, this is an excellent filament to get. I set up a print profile based on the recommendations in the forums and it printed flawlessly.

This stuff looks amazing! Printed using Bambu P1S - I had to do a flow rate calibration for this filament as it behaved slightly differently than the regular black PETG - once new values were put in amazing quality print. I print sideways on a lot of my prints, so the layer lines are the primary exposure area, and this stuff looks way better than the regular black PETg. Also very impressed with California Filament's service, quality of shipping / packaging, winding of the spools, moisture levels, etc.. all great! Also they hooked me up with a sample pack which was awesome for seeing their colors which is why I got the matte black. i was pleasantly surprised when the print from my printer came out as a better quality than the sample swatch haha.

Absolutely the best looking PETG. Probably the closest looking to injection molded I’ve seen come out of a 3D printer. Layer lines on flat surfaces nearly disappear.

When they say Matte Black, they mean it. It almost looks like a carbon fiber type finish. Very impressed. Printed on a Kobra 3 with pre loaded PETG settings. Temp at 225. Looks great and is super strong. This has 25% infill. I stood on it and no breakage. Very good filament.

When the matte black PETG works, it is beyond great. The problem is poor consistency in the product. One reel will work beautifully. Then the very next reel (bought at the same time) fails to feed reliably. My printer doesn't detect the lack of motion of the filament, so it continues "printing" even though no filament is coming out. So once the failure is discovered, I have to remove the filament, where I see it's condition is as shown in the picture, cut off a few inches of filament and try printing again. If I'm lucky, I'll be successful with the retry . It's a big waste of time each time this happens. If the failure occurs near the start of the print, only a few ounces of filament is wasted. But if it happens near the end of the print, over 100 ounces is wasted (plus the 7 - 9 wasted hours). When the reel of filament works right, I get 8 parts per reel. When the reels don't work, I'm lucky to get two or three parts. To rule out a printer problem, I used two different colors of California Filament PETG to make over 25 parts and the results were perfect. There's something about this matte black that gives very unreliable results. Maybe the diameter isn't consistent or maybe the hardness of the plastic varies so the extruder drive can't grip the plastic. I don't know what the problem is. I've written CF about this before but their response made no sense since sometimes the product works and sometimes it doesn't, even using the same print settings on the same part. The first couple of reels I bought were great and I was full of praise for the product. The next 3 reel were horrible. Ever the optimist I bought 3 more reels. The first was excellent. The second has been a nightmare. I've only successfully made one part from it. I haven't tried the third reel yet. I guess I need to find another source for matte black PETG or go back to the shiny black, which didn't give as nice results but at least I get completed parts.

This isn't exactly the most "plug and print" type of filament; definitely takes some time to get temp, cooling and flow rate correct. However when its correctly tuned, this stuff is absolutely amazing. Prints exceptionally well, no issues with bed or inner layer adhesion and it hides layer lines exceptionally well.
James C. 5/5
Definitely have to tune your settings a little differently but it’s worth every bit of the effort.

Prints really well on the Bambu X1C using the filament settings from the forums. I calibrated the filament and printed out some brackets for my tractor to hold on work lights. They look really good. Note the damage in the pictures is from the star washers I use to bite into the plastic and hold the work light at the angle I move it and avoid it moving from bounces due to driving the tractor over rough terrain.

I'm getting the best results with your matte black PETG. The appearance of my models were much better than I've had with any other PETG I've used, even better than the PLA I used to use (before I discovered the PLA warped at too low of a temperature). Now I'm getting the best of both worlds.

I pretty much exclusively use this Matte Black Filament for anything I 3D print. It prints easily on my cheap Ender 3 pro printer and gives a nice high end appearance that matches all of my electronics. If you don't like that glossy sheen of most black filament, give this a try. I go about 5 degrees lower than regular filament and has worked without issues.

Before moving to primarily printing in PETG, Matte PLA was my go to. This is the second Matte PETG product I've tried. I had a terrible experience with the first one Matte PETG I tried from another brand. This filament has been a pleasure to print with so far. After calibrating the filament my first few prints have come out great on a bambu x1c. Very excited to add this filament to my list of options.

Beautiful Matte Black color! There aren't many Matte PETG options, and I'm so glad California Filaments exists! I've been using them for a few weeks and ordered multiple times already. They have quick shipping and they've always had what I need in stock. I've used this PETG on most of my prints and it has a really nice Matte finish to it. It can be a bit finnicky to print, but in my Bambu X1C I only tweaked a few things: Nozzle - Initial Layer:230, all other 220. Heated Plate - Initial Layer: 70, all others 65. There are some others suggesting to print it much hotter, and while it seems to print more consistently that way, I feel like it gets too hot and leaves a film on my enclosure kinda like ABS has a tendency to do. So I like the lower temps, AND I think it improves the Matte finish.

It's a bit tricky to get started but once you get it dialed in the results speak for themselves! Matte Black vs Black PETG

The way the Matte Black looks and feels (yes, its got a luxery matte feel) is unlike any other filament. Just spend some time to get the settings right and it will be your favorite.

I used matte black as a second color and it looks great against the new olive green! Way to go CF!

The matte PETG filament looks great, but it is absolutely necessary to dry it (even when brand new) and keep it dry, or will will not have a good time printing.

Love the finish of this filament once it is dialed in. It's the only filament I use for my products

I needed something similar to Prusa black, but it’s out of stock everywhere. I bought this hoping it would work out. I did dry it for 24 hours before doing this 25 hour print, but it came out incredible. The temp profile was nearly identical to prusa and there was no stringing etc. I’ll be looking to get more matte black for my next big print

I first purchased a 1kg roll but loved the matte black so much I bought the 5kg roll next. Filament showed up next day to my house in Southern CA. Prints great for me at 240 hot end , 80 bed with 1.4mm retraction, on a Prusam MK3S+. I respooled the filament onto an extra 1kg spool I had laying around with no issues.

Great stuff! The matte looks really nice and subtle. Nice change from the classic super shiny petg. It came pretty dang wet out of the package but printed great after some drying. If you’re purchasing petg then you know petg must be dried or you’ll get awful results. This stuff printed clean and the finish was really nice. For the price this is definitely going to be my default petg going forward. I 100% recommend this stuff. I’ve printed with Prusament, overture, polymaker, and others but this stuff is definitely my favorite. Don’t look elsewhere, just buy this and go forth and conquer. If you’re getting bad results from this filament it’s 100% either your settings or moisture. The filament is great quality. DO IT.

First time buying California Filaments! I wrote a longer review for the Matte Blue, but same results! Excellent print, and dimensional accuracy (no shrink) very similar to the carbon fiber matte finish, I was just printing some Nylon cf15 and the difference in finish between the two is negligible. I think I could get an even more matte appearance with a slightly cooler hotend, but really I was just looking for a good quality black pet g at a reasonable price. Note: run it through a filament dryer even right out of the box for best results! There were some signs of moisture content in pre drying test samples Kevin (Seattle)

Came very, very, very wet out of the packaging. Bag was sealed well so it must have come this way from manufacturing. Was so wet it was steaming/smoking enough to fill the enclosure of my V0.2 within seconds, and it would clog every 10 minutes. Dried it in a heated dry box and the relative humidity got up to 53%. I've only seen it get up to the low 30's with other filaments. Once I dried it out for 24 hours at 70C, it printed well, but man there must have been a bad batch of this or something.

Like the Paper White, I really like the matte black and will be purchasing it again. I can see it making a great background filament to use for signs. It isn't glossy like most PETG black and does hide layer lines well.

This matte black is gorgeous and I will soon switch all my products over to it. It took a bit of trial and error to get it dialed in. I have zero stringing printing at 205C on my Prusa Mini with 2mm retraction.

I love this stuff. I print it with the generic PETG profile on my Prusa MK3S and don't have any issues I wouldn't otherwise experience with standard PETG. The Darth Vader in my pic uses the Matte PETG on the body and standard PETG for the helmet. It is a great combination of looks and functionality. I designed and printed a Steam Deck Dock with this stuff and it holds up to the working temps without warping or feeling soft.

Difficult to print, but a good finish. I don't think it will be my goto but for aesthetics I will use it sometimes. Followed the suggestions in the forums which helped.
